If you had told me 20 years ago that someday I would be in the business of real estate – and specifically property management – I would have smiled and replied that I just couldn’t see that happening. But here I am, utilizing my communications and human resources background in a way I never expected.
Property management is really about the business of building relationships, and at its core, it’s the simple aspect of earning trust. When an owner signs a management agreement with me, they are giving me access to a valuable resource that belongs to them. I have no claim to it, but they have to believe that I will treat it like my own. And I do.
Being a good property manager means having a positive and engaged relationship with the residents too. From their perspective, they have to trust that I am providing a home that is well-maintained, that I will respond in a timely way to maintenance issues, and that I will abide by the governing laws in the State of Georgia. But it’s a two-way relationship because I work very hard to place people in my clients’ homes that are strong applicants and have been thoroughly screened by a third party.
Upon retiring, my father-in-law, a highly skilled and sought-after dental technician who had his own lab, needed something to keep his hands busy. He began making jewelry and carving birds. When he came for a visit one year, he brought me a lovely carving of a hummingbird drinking from a trumpet vine plant. I had no idea how special that carving would become to me, and how much I would enjoy my newfound interest in those tiny birds. I’ve heard that they symbolize Joy, but they also represent vibrancy and vitality.
